Leaving the Fort Clatsop area we are going to follow the path east taken by the Corps of Discovery. We cross the Columbia at Longview (again) and reenter the Columbia River Gorge outside of Portland. It was a lot more beautiful this time with the sun shining.

We stopped at the famous Multnomah Falls.

We followed the river up through The Dalles and into the desert upriver. We went up to Sacagawea State Park established at the confluence of the Snake River and the Columbia River.

From this point L&C started cross-country on a shortcut known by Sacagawea. It saved time and distance.

An ancient trail |
Once we reached Lewiston we followed the Clearwater river across Idaho. This route is part of an ancient trail system through the Bitterroot Mtns. This was the most difficult part of their journey. Rt 12 across Idaho is a beautiful route. It winds up along the rivers as they get more shallow and narrow the farther up into the Bitterroot Mountains that you travel.

Eventually you make your way up the Lolo Pass. We were there on the exact day that L&C were there 208 years earlier.
We made our way down into Montana and the town of Lolo. We are heading about 20 miles farther to Missoula where we will stay for a week.
